Fluid Dynamics in Health

Understanding Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Lymphatic, and Hydrostatic Systems across all Ages

COMING 2025 | 9am-5pm | Albury, NSW, Australia

This course explores the intricate workings of the cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, and hydrostatic systems across various life stages and within the context of osteopathic practice. Beginning with an overview of fluid dynamics’ significance, the course delves into the anatomy and functions of each system, emphasising their roles in maintaining homeostasis and overall health. Special attention is given to the implications of fluid dynamics in infants, adults, and how osteopathy addresses fluid-related issues through direct osteopathic techniques. By understanding the interplay of fluids within the body, practitioners gain insights into optimising health outcomes and enhancing patient well-being.

This is a practical course which will allow you to gain hands on techniques and skills to apply straight away to practice.

Outcomes

This course:

  1. Considers the clinical importance of the foetal-infant transition physiology on body dynamics, homeostatic regulation

  2. Updates understanding of cranial movement dynamics, CSF and venous flow, and brain perfusion / immune clearance

  3. Discusses whole body and body cavity lymph and serous fluid dynamics, looking at immune communication and function, and implications for postural control

  4. Reviews anatomy and hands-on approaches for the cardiovascular system, and main lymphatic points

  5. Reviews the constructs of the polyvagal system, enabling a critical appraisal and discussion of a wider neurophysiological construct linking homeostasis and movement patterns and stress responses

  6. Introduces concepts of the bioelectrical cardiac field and implications for the ‘rule of the artery’ discussions in osteopathy

CURRICULUM

What we'll cover

  1. Reviews foetal-fluids in transition—discussing primitive reflexes and autonomic system challenges in the birth process

  2. Includes discussion of first breath concepts and postnatal physiological challenges in paediatric care

  3. Reviews autonomic nervous system control of the cardiorespiratory systems, enabling a deconstruction of the polyvagal system

  4. A critique of the polyvagal system and discussion of a wider, more complex network picture to link stress, movement and social engagement.

  5. Introduction of hands-on approaches for the heart and lungs and integrated thoracic / regional biomechanics

  6. Reviews lymphatic system anatomy and palpation / manual approaches
